PURESCRAP at the 41st AIM National Conference in Brescia

On 10th of September 2026, Alice Petrucciani from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna represented PURESCRAP at the 41st National Conference of the Italian Association for Metallurgy (AIM) in Brescia, Italy.

As part of the conference session on decarbonisation and circular economy in steelmaking, Alice presented ongoing research carried out within PURESCRAP together with Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and Danieli. Her presentation, entitled “Metodologie per la classificazione dei rottami per migliorare l’efficienza e la circolarità dell’industria siderurgica” (“Scrap classification methodologies to improve efficiency and circularity in the steel industry”), focused on the application of Artificial Intelligence for steel scrap classification.

Reliable information on scrap composition and the identification of unwanted elements are important prerequisites for increasing the use of post-consumer scrap in steel production. Within PURESCRAP, advanced sensor technologies and data-driven approaches are being investigated to improve scrap characterization, support more targeted sorting and ultimately facilitate a more efficient use of secondary raw materials.

The AIM National Conference provided a valuable opportunity to share the project’s developments with the Italian metallurgical research and industrial community and to exchange perspectives on digitalisation, circularity and the transition towards more resource-efficient steel production.
